We conducted a physical examination and took a thorough medical
history, and reviewed the previous CT scans. It revealed issues with
the lumbar spine starting from the third, to the fourth and fifth
vertebrae, affecting a total of three vertebrae. The lumbar support
exhibited signs of degeneration and displacement, particularly
notable in the movement of the fourth and fifth vertebrae, with
significant displacement. This condition resulted in compression
on both sides of the nerve lines. Currently, we have advanced
technology, specifically endoscopic discectomy and decompression,
which does not require major surgery. The incisions are less than
1 centimetre, allowing the insertion of a tiny endoscope to address
specific problematic areas. Patients typically stay overnight and
can often walk home the next morning.
“For this patient, the procedure focused on the fourth and fifth
vertebrae. Once the endoscope was inserted, a small opening
was made in the spine to access and reposition the displaced
intervertebral disc. Subsequently, any disc protrusions that were
causing nerve compression were carefully removed, and the release
of these compressed nerves resulted in overall improvement. This
procedure minimised damage to the spinal structure, resulting
in only small, tiny openings. The muscles experience minimal
trauma since there is no need for extensive muscle dissection. The
incisions are small, and when the bone structure is not disrupted,
there is no need for screws to be inserted.”
