Mega Lifesciences’ CEO Vivek Dhawan bases the
success of his Thailand-based company on a passionate
motivation to help people stay healthy. That’s his
philosophy, his driving force “to do something good in
[his] life.”
Vivek heads the company, founded in 1986, with
plants in Thailand and Australia that manufacture
high-quality prescription drugs, over-the-counter (OTC)
pharmaceuticals, as well as nutritional and herbal
supplements. It distributes its products in 31 countries,
including India, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam,
Malaysia and Russia in Asia; Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria,
Tanzania and Uganda in Africa; Ukraine and Denmark in
Europe; and Peru in South America. Mega Lifesciences
first built up its business in Thailand through the 1980s
and early 1990s. It entered the Myanmar and Cambodia
markets in the mid-1990s. Then it expanded to Indonesia,
Malaysia, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, United Arab Emirates,
Vietnam and Yemen. “We build markets,” explains Vivek.
“We don’t do trends. Our business is very different. Our
products are medicine, designed and developed to make
a difference and to improve your health.”
Vivek built a place of business “where people love to
come to work.” Mega Lifesciences, with about 4,500
employees, got listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand
in 2013. The latest 52-week range for share price
is B15.90 to B29.25. “I didn’t build this alone. Many
employees that started with me more than 30 years ago
are still with me,” he says. “I’m not a pharmacist. I’m an
engineer. Our experts bring the best of what they have
in them. They helped create what we have today. We
allow them the freedom to do what they do very well. We
should help people find themselves and maximize the
good things they have. We should also help them learn to
manage their weaknesses, which we all have.”
