PRECONCEPTION
GENETIC
TESTING
80% of babies born with genetic disorders have no known
family history of the condition.
One in 550 pregnant women is at risk of having a child with
a recessive genetic disorder that is severe in nature.
Preconception genetic testing can provide screening and
diagnosis at the gene level with an accuracy of up to 95%.
Five genetic disorders caused by gene mutations hidden
(recessive) in parents who are carriers, common in both
Thai nationals and foreigners, include:
THALASSEMIA SYNDROME: This is caused by red blood
cell abnormalities. If both parents are carriers, the child has
up to a 25% risk of being born with thalassemia major. If,
however, both parents have thalassemia, there is a 100%
chance that the child will be born with thalassemia.
SMA (SPINAL MUSCULAR ATROPHY): This is inherited in
an autosomal recessive pattern, found in all races. It is a
disease of the spinal cord nerve cells, called motor neurons,
which leads to their degeneration.
