The garden is a spa-like enclave, made up of infinity pools and wooden decking.
“You’ll find nothing bought off the shelf here,” Kanika
tells us matter of factly, as she drags us away from
the temple and back through the main door to start
the house tour from the entrance — the proper way
as it were. And what an entrance it is.
The house does not come with a generous sized
plot, but Kanika has not let that get in the way of her
vision. She has treated the outdoor space with as
much respect as she has given the inside.
Entered from the road, a large house-width wooden
gate embraces the plot and slides open to welcome
The TV room from outside us within. The contrast is stark. From an ordinary
side street in Bangkok, we find ourselves within
a partially sheltered spa-like enclave, made up of
infinity water pools, decking of strong wood, yellow
colour blocked walls and uniformed rows of plants.
“We had to give up on the idea of having grass,”
Kanika says. Not for want of trying though. Kanika
tried to lay turf seven times in all, before finally
giving in to the advice of her gardener. “The plot
doesn’t get enough sunlight; you’ll have to come up
with something else.” She did, and before long her
dying turf had become transformed into an idyllic
water garden, beautifully echoing the calm interiors
of her home.
