Ravinder Sachdev, more fondly known as Jenny,
explores two simple recipes that are always a
party favourite.
I have always had a passion for cooking,
be it for family, guests or even myself. As a
child, I was always drawn to the kitchen to
watch my mum and grandma cook simple
dishes with subtle sophistication.
Since then I began to pursue my passion
for cooking. I would create my own recipes,
perfect existing ones, enhance the taste of
dishes I wasn’t happy with and experiment
with fusion foods, all within the comforts
of my kitchen. The gradual growth of this
talent came as I acquired fundamental skills compatible to that of a capable
home chef. I spent a signi cant amount of my day sur ng the web, watching
and learning from cooking shows, taking up crash courses on preparing various
cuisines and trying out recipes that intrigued me. Throughout this process,
I would always be reminded of what my elders taught me — to master and
strengthen simple skills rst in order to develop a strong foundation in life. In
simple words, my dal and roti had to be perfect before I tried to create exotic
dishes. Overtime, I have discovered that cooking gives me great joy. It is a stress
buster and a medium to express emotions as a culinary artist.
However, to be a good cook, you don’t need to have the expertise to create
complicated dishes. It is about adding your touch of idiosyncrasy by playing
around with avours. Cooking comes from the heart, and I believe adding a
spoonful of love into any dish will always make it taste better. Living in a joint
family, where my entire family enjoys dinner together every night, I have learnt
that nothing brings people closer together than food does, especially when it is
cooked and served with love.
