Several reasons why content prevails include the rise of Video on Demand platforms such as YouTube, Netfl ix and
Amazon Prime, which led to less seats being fi lled in theatres. A fi lm needs to be exceptional to convince audiences to
visit the cinema, especially when increasingly good content is available so easily on digital mediums. Thus, an average
moviegoer no longer falls for the 50-year-old celebrity wooing a woman in her late 20’s, nor will they blindly go for a
Kangana Ranaut starrer, like in the case of Rangoon and Simran. Masala takes a look at some of Bollywood’s hits and
misses that resonate with the new Indian movie mantra.
HITS
Baahubali 2: The Conclusion
Starring: Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Anushka Shetty, Tamannaah
Critics Rating:
Box Offi ce Collection: Rs 1,380 crore
Baahubali: The Conclusion is the second-highest grossing Indian fi lm
worldwide, surpassed only by Aamir Khan’s fi lm Dangal (2016). The fi lm,
made originally in Telugu and Tamil, was highly awaited by the whole
of India, with everyone asking on social media, why did Kattappa kill
Baahubali? One critic commented saying “It is a visual extravaganza that
India must feast on.” And indeed, India did. This fi lm was a memorable
event for the audiences where they experienced amazing VFX effects
and a well-defi ned story.
Tiger Zinda Hai
Starring: Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif
Critics Rating:
Box Offi ce Collection: Rs 330 crore
Despite the disappointing business of bigger fi lms this year, Tiger Zinda
Hai is a blockbuster. The fi lm puts Salman back into action, fi ghting
wolves with his bare hands and dodging bullets from Iraqi terrorists. It
certainly helps that Katrina Kaif is in the movie too. Though there are
some logic-defying moments, the director delivers an entertaining fi lm
appreciated by the masses.
Toilet: Ek Prem Katha
Starring: Akshay Kumar, Bhumi Pednekar
Critics Rating:
Box Offi ce Collection: Rs 216 crore
No one expected that a fi lm on sanitation would amass major crores at
the box offi ce, but when that fi lm stars Akshay Kumar, it’s a different
story. This fi lm is a satirical take on the age-old tradition of not relieving
oneself at your home. Akshay’s character educates India on the problem
of open defecation and the need for a toilet. With a fun love story,
superior acting and some laughs, this fi lm was highly loved by all.
